On Saturday, our last day on the Danube, a large group of us took a 25 mile bike ride along the Danube through the beautiful Wachau Valley. Riding upstream, between the towns of Krems and Melk, we passed through lovely little towns, huge vineyards, orchards and fields. Most of the route was a dedicated bike trail, following the river as it winds through this world heritage site. The route is dotted with spectacular ruins, towers, churches, graveyards and monasteries. But perhaps the best unexpected stop was for fresh, organic cherries, picked for us by a local Austrian man from a public tree on the bike route. Please take them, he said, they are for everyone! Wow, what a treat.
