This morning, a small but enthusiastic group set off on the Budapest subway to go kayaking and canoeing. Nine stops up on the blue line, after a little wandering around, we found our destination: an old rowing club with kayaks of every sort, canoes, and a serious rowing program. It didn't seem like recreational rentals were really part of the business, but Louise had scouted it out in May and assured us that they were up to the task. Speaking no Hungarian, we relied on the club director's modest English and managed to rent three kayaks and a canoe. We set off with Eva, a national level competitor in the double scull. The club reminded us of Community Rowing on the Charles: teaming with young athletes, full of all kinds of boats, and obviously thriving. Dozens of young people were training on the water, most of them in competitive kayaks. What a great way to spend a beautiful morning on the Danube in Budapest!
